What Is BOTOX?

BOTOX is the brand name of a form of diluted botulinum toxin. It has been used for years to eliminate wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. With just 10 minutes and a few painless injections, Dr. Voller can quickly apply the BOTOX to your problem areas. It gently prevents the muscles from making the motions that cause the skin to crease and wrinkle. The results are almost instant and can easily last for up to several months.

Our team can also use BOTOX to reduce or eliminate symptoms of TMJ disorder (TMD).

Who Is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?

BOTOX might be a suitable option for you if:

  • You are in your late 20s or older. The legal minimum age for BOTOX is 18, but most people wait until they have noticeable signs of aging before they start injections.
  • You have movement-based wrinkles. This can include issues like crow’s feet, lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, smoker’s lines around the lips, and more.
  • You are a low-risk patient. Our team will screen you to make sure you do not have any contraindications for BOTOX.

The Benefits of BOTOX

Some of the most noteworthy benefits of BOTOX include:

  • The treatment is fast — your appointment may last just 20 – 60 minutes.
  • You may start seeing results within a few days (it usually takes 1 – 2 weeks for optimum results to become noticeable).
  • The results may last for 3 – 6 months before additional injections are required.
  • BOTOX can look very natural; you will not have to worry about looking like you have “had some work done.”
  • BOTOX is a cost-effective treatment compared to many invasive cosmetic procedures.

BOTOX FAQs

Is BOTOX Safe?

It’s understandable to be nervous about having botulinum toxin injected into your face, but you can rest assured that the substance is considered safe in small doses. Of course, this is assuming that the professional administering your BOTOX is an experienced professional and that the injections have been properly prepared according to the standards set by the FDA.

In general, it’s very rare for adverse events to occur as a result of cosmetic BOTOX. In fact, in the first 14 years after the FDA initially approved BOTOX injections, only 36 instances of adverse effects were reported, and much of the time they were due to an underlying medical condition rather than the BOTOX itself.

Is BOTOX Permanent?

No, BOTOX is not permanent. Over time, your body will start to break down the injected material, eventually allowing the muscles in that area to once again make the motions that lead to wrinkles. That said, BOTOX injections will last longer for certain patients than others due to age, metabolism, and other variables.

The temporary nature of BOTOX is actually a good thing overall. It gives you a level of flexibility with the treatment, allowing you to stop whenever you want. And if you’re unhappy with the results of BOTOX, you can simply wait for the effects to wear off.

Who Should Not Get BOTOX?

BOTOX is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding. It’s classified as a Category C drug; this means that it could potentially be harmful to an unborn fetus, but currently there are no controlled studies of its effect on pregnant humans.

Additionally, you should not get BOTOX if you have certain neuromuscular disorders or breathing conditions. It’s also not a good choice for people who are allergic to the protein in cow’s milk. It’s best to go over your medical history with your regular healthcare provider in order to determine whether BOTOX is a viable option in your case.

Will My Wrinkles Get Worse If I Stop Using BOTOX?

No. Once BOTOX wears off, your muscles will start moving as they did before, causing your skin to wrinkle the way it did previously. So your wrinkles will return, but they won’t be worse than they were.

If anything, BOTOX can potentially still have benefits even after you stop using it. While under the effects of the injection, the affected muscles will grow weaker, and your body will be retrained, causing it to be less prone to making the motions that resulted in wrinkles in the first place. So even if your wrinkles return, they may actually be better than before; at the very least, you can rest assured that they won’t be worse.

Is BOTOX Only for Women?

This is a misconception; plenty of men can also benefit from BOTOX. In fact, it’s estimated that over 500,000 BOTOX injections are performed on men in the United States every year. Many men choose to get BOTOX treatments to look younger, which can be beneficial for their personal and professional lives. It’s common for men to get BOTOX to address crow’s feet, frown lines, laugh lines, and forehead creases.
